Nominate Your Favorite Kidlit Books for the Cybils Awards!

Book awards are important! Writers can’t read every book on their TBR list even though they devote tons of time to reading! Kids are pulled in tons of different directions by school, sports, texts, television, games and more. If a book has some buzz or wins an award, that might give a child the extra push he or she needs to check out the first page…and just maybe they’ll get sucked in and read the whole story! Be part of getting great books noticed by nominating your favorite books for the Cybils Book Awards!

The Cybils Awards are the book bloggers’ book awards. They recognize excellence in story-telling for children and teens. If you read my post on the 6 Reasons Writers Should Judge Book Awards, you’ve heard the Cybils’ mission:

“If some la-di-dah awards can be compared to brussels sprouts, and other, more populist ones to gummy bears, we’re thinking more like organic chicken nuggets. We’re yummy and nutritious.”

Have you read some books that are well written and kids will love? ANYONE can make a nomination for the Cybils Book Awards. It’s easy! Here’s how you do it:

Nominating a Book for the Cybils Book Awards

  1. Make a list of the books you loved that were published in the past 12 months. Books for children and teens published in the U.S. or Canada between October 16, 2017 and October 15, 2018 are eligible. If a book will be published after October 15, 2018, it will be eligible next year.

2. Separate the books on your list into categories. The Cybils categories are:

– Easy Readers and Early Chapter Books
– Elementary/Middle-Grade Nonfiction
– Elementary/Middle-Grade Speculative Fiction
– Fiction Picture Books/Board Books
– Graphic Novels
– Junior/Senior High Nonfiction
– Middle-Grade Fiction
– Poetry
– Young Adult Fiction
– Young Adult Speculative Fiction

If you’re not positive which category a book falls into, you can read the category descriptions. If you’re still not sure, just make the nomination in the category you think best fits the book. The Category chairs will go through the nominations on their list and move books from one list to another, if necessary.

3. Head over to the Cybils website and make your nominations. You can nominate one book per category. If your first-pick book for a category has already been nominated, go ahead an nominate your second-favorite. Do this by OCTOBER 15TH! That’s this year’s deadline for nominations.

You can find more information on nominating books for the Cybils Book Awards here or go here to make your nominations.

Happy nominating!
