Windows and Mirrors: Tiffany Sly Lives Here Now

Welcome to Windows & Mirrors, where we feature books that provide us windows to lives outside our own and mirrors to our shared common human experiences.

Today we’re featuring TIFFANY SLY LIVES HERE NOW by Dana L. Davis

TIFFANY SLY LIVES HERE NOW encompasses many different issues that make it a perfect book for our Windows and Mirrors series.

Tiffany Sly lost her mom to cancer and now has to leave her hometown of Chicago to live with the biological dad, and four sisters, she never met. The only thing that makes her new life and the new family rules bearable is the strange boy across the street who had his own experience with death. As Tiffany attempts to adjust, she realizes that family is about the bonds you make and sometimes taking risks.

As Dana L. Davis wrote in her acknowledgments, it was her experience with depression and anxiety that compelled her to write this story. Readers who suffer from these disorders will recognize the signs, and those unfamiliar with them will get a glimpse into how they can take control and interfere with every day activities like riding in a car.

I recognized myself in Tiffany in many ways, such as suddenly being faced with a stepmother and siblings. The transition for her, and myself, was a rocky one that required patience and understanding on both sides.

In addition to the topics mentioned above, there are other issues I personally related to and more I am fortunate to have gotten a peek at.

  1. Dealing with a dying loved one
  2. Leaving everything to live with strangers
  3. The feelings and interactions between Black and mixed women
  4. Being forced to follow another religion
  5. Choosing a friend described as different
